Football Manager on mobile now needs a Netflix subscription, which has pushed a lot of people to ask what else is out there. The answer is a lot, and the quality varies from "surprisingly decent" to "energy bar every two matches".
This list covers games that are free to download and playable without spending. We've noted where the in-app purchases start to bite, because "free" means different things to different developers.
The closest thing to a free Football Manager. Real leagues, real players (over 90 leagues across 54 countries), a 3D match engine, transfers, training and a tactics screen that goes deeper than you'd expect. It's single-player, so you can play at your own pace and play offline.
The catch: ads between matches, and a credits system you can pay to skip. You can ignore both and still finish a season. Best pick if you want a proper club sim without paying.
The most mainstream free manager game, with tens of millions of downloads. Licensed clubs and players, quick daily sessions, and leagues against other people. You set your line-up and tactics, then check back for results.
It's light on depth compared with Soccer Manager, and the boss coins economy is designed to nudge you towards paying, but it's easy to dip in and out of. Good if you want ten minutes a day rather than an evening.
Nordeus's game has been going since 2010 and is still the most-played football management title on mobile. The pitch is social: your league is 14 other real people, seasons run on a real-world clock, and matches happen whether you're there or not.
It's competitive and the community is huge. It's also the most heavily monetised game on this list. Tokens and rest packs gate your progression, so a free player moves noticeably slower than a paying one. Enjoyable if you like the rivalry, frustrating if you don't.
The oldest game here (1997) and the only one with no pay-to-win at all. It's a browser game with a mobile app, fictional players, two matches a week and a season that takes 16 real weeks. Slow by design.
The economy is player-driven, the community has 25 years of accumulated knowledge, and the tactics are more subtle than anything on the app store. If you want a club you'll still be running in 2030, this is it.
Included because it's free if you already pay for Netflix, and it's the most complete FM has ever been on a phone. Full Premier League licence with real kits and badges, player roles, proper training, global scouting. No ads, no in-app purchases.
If you don't have Netflix, it isn't free, so it depends on your household. Worth knowing that the Apple Arcade version, FM Touch, is a separate product with its own subscription.
From Go Play Games, the studio behind Club Soccer Director. The angle is that you don't have to be the manager: you can be the chairman, director of football or head coach, hire and fire staff, build the stadium and shape the club's philosophy. The 2026 version added a refreshed match engine with 3D highlights.
The match simulation is lighter than Soccer Manager and it leans on in-app purchases, but nothing else on mobile lets you run the whole club from the boardroom down.
A love letter to Championship Manager. Over 200 historical seasons, so you can take Maradona to Munich in 1990 or manage Leeds in 2000. Text-based, quick, and a full season takes less time than a commute. iPhone only, free with optional purchases.
Half management, half arcade. You run the club, but at key moments in each match you take control of the ball for a quick swipe-to-shoot sequence. It's more game than sim, and better for it if you get bored watching highlights. Free with adverts and optional purchases.
A newer browser-based game that also works well on a phone. No app, no account needed to start, no energy system. It's a single-player sim that runs locally, which means it's fast and never pushes you to spend. Fictional players, so no licences, but the trade-off is a game that just gets on with it.
And if what you actually want is the Premier League, a full season, and no tokens, Manager of Football is built for exactly that. Play it free in your browser.
