Yes, the names are similar. No, they're not the same thing. Football Manager is a 40GB simulation of the entire footballing world that you install and live inside for a season of your real life. Manager of Football is a Premier League management game that runs in a browser tab and asks for none of that.
This is a comparison, not a hit piece. FM does things nothing else can. Here's where the two differ, so you can work out which one you actually want on a Tuesday evening.
Scale. FM has hundreds of thousands of players across dozens of countries. You can manage in the Faroe Islands. Manager of Football is the Premier League: 20 clubs, real squads, one league, its cups and competitions.
The 3D match. FM26's match engine is the best it's ever had, and if watching your tactics play out visually is the point for you, nothing else comes close. Manager of Football shows you the match as a live text ticker: the chances, the goals, the moments that matter. Closer to Championship Manager than to FM26.
Everything else. Training schedules, staff hiring, press conferences, player dynamics, scouting networks, youth intakes, data hub. FM simulates the whole club. We simulate the decisions the manager is actually judged on.
A career that never ends. FM saves run for 30 seasons. Manager of Football is ongoing too, but you're managing one club, and the board will sack you if it goes wrong. Which brings us to the other half.
No install, no sign-up, no cost. It runs in a browser. You open the page and pick a club. There's no 40GB download, no launcher, no account creation, and no subscription. FM26 is £55 on PC and needs Netflix on a phone.
A season you'll finish. A full FM season takes most people 40 to 80 hours. A Manager of Football season is a few evenings. That's the whole design. Every hour you'd spend in FM's training screens is an hour you spend on selection, tactics and the transfer window instead.
The squad cost ratio. The Premier League replaced PSR with an 85% squad cost ratio this season. Manager of Football is built around it. Your wages, fees and player sales all move a ratio the board is watching. FM26 models finances, but not this rule specifically, and not with this much weight on it.
Squads updated for 2026/27. All 20 clubs, the real players, the summer's transfers. FM26 stopped receiving updates in June, so its database is a season behind. FM27 arrives in November.
Works on your phone. Same game, same browser, no separate mobile version with features removed.
The core loop. You pick a team, set a shape, handle the transfer window, watch the match, look at the table, answer to the board. If you enjoy that in FM, you'll recognise it here. If you enjoy FM for the layers around that loop, you'll miss them.
Getting sacked. Both games will end your time at a club if the results aren't there. Manager of Football gets to that point faster, because there's less to hide behind.
Play Football Manager if: you want depth above all, you want to manage anywhere in the world, you want the 3D match, and you have the hours. FM24 is the safe pick right now; FM27 is the one to watch in November.
Play Manager of Football if: you want the Premier League specifically, you want a season you can complete this month, you don't want to install anything, or FM26 put you off and you'd rather not wait for FM27 to find out if it's fixed.
Play both if: you're a normal person who has a long FM save on the PC and wants something quicker on the train. Plenty of people do.
We made Manager of Football because we love Football Manager and stopped having time for it. The game we wanted was the transfer window, the team sheet, the ticker, the table, and the board breathing down our necks, without the 20 hours of setup before the first competitive match. That's what this is.
It's free and it runs in your browser. Try a season.
